Graduates and their families came together in Albany, N.Y. Friday, July 11 to celebrate Excelsior College’s 2014 Commencement. More than 300 of a graduating class of 4,693 are attended the ceremony at the Empire State Convention Center. Jamie P. Merisotis, president and CEO of Lumina Foundation, the nation’s largest private foundation committed solely to enrolling and graduating more students from college, offered the keynote address.

Typical Excelsior graduates are working adults, average age 37 years old, balancing jobs, family and college coursework, while seeking to improve their lives and advance in their careers. This year’s graduates come from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and 19 other nations. They earned their degrees through online coursework, credit by examination, transferring credit from other institutions, and recognized non-collegiate sources. Nearly 1,600 graduates are members of the U.S. military and 34 percent are from minority groups.

In total, more than 1,700 degrees were conferred at the associate level, 2,600 at the bachelor’s and nearly 300 at the master’s level. Fifty nine students earned more than one degree during the past academic year and the oldest graduate is 69 years old.

While each graduate leaves Excelsior with a degree, their personal journey to Commencement is unique.

Anna Truss fled her troubled home country of Turkmenistan for Turkey in 2004 in search of academic freedom, eventually making her way to the U.S. via a student-exchange program. Passionate about math and science, the Seattle, Washington resident taught herself web development, graduated from a community college, and enrolled in Excelsior’s Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program, concentrating in cybersecurity. In August 2013, Truss followed the path of so many immigrants before her and started her own business, DefSec Solutions, LLC, a digital forensics firm, with three former classmates. In addition to running a successful – and growing – company, she’s now pursuing a Master of Science in Cybersecurity from Excelsior.

Other notable 2014 graduates who embody the spirit of lifelong learning – and who will be in attendance at this year’s ceremony – include:

How Veterans Get a Leg Up in the Job Market Using Transferable Skills

    By Maribeth Gunner Pulliam

If you have retired from the military and are transitioning to a civilian career, it’s time to take an inventory of your transferable skills – the skills that will place you light years ahead of your civilian peers in a recovering economy.

The job market remains sluggish and veterans in particular are challenged in finding work. But there is good news. The experience and knowledge gained from military service, including training and coursework, has provided you with valuable transferable skills that will serve you well in your transition to civilian life. The challenge: Define these skills and sell them – and yourself – to your future employer.

What are “transferable skills?” These are the proficiencies mainly acquired through broad work, education, and life experience, and they translate across jobs and career fields. For instance, if you worked as a training specialist in the military, you have probably mastered communications and personnel management skills, as well as leadership abilities that are sought and valued in business and industry, government or education.

In addition, most military personnel have developed “work-content skills” that are technical and job-specific. These skills typically require formal training. They are more specific to trades or professions. And they have a separate skills-based vocabulary or jargon that is unique to the job, such as knowledge of certain sophisticated equipment operation. Work-content skills are not as portable as transferable skills, but when combined, both skill sets reflect the strength of your overall work ethic and demonstrate the array of accomplishments and abilities you have attained.

What employers want

Prospective employers have one important question: What can you do for us? The answer is often found in your portable, transferable skills. These skills influence how you prepare a top-notch resume and cover letter, conduct your job search and convey your talents in an interview. As you recognize and reveal these skills, you will also get a boost of self-esteem about your own achievements.

Identify your transferable skills

Start by reviewing your past or current educational, work, military and life experiences. Did your experience teach you to analyze data and write reports? Supervise others? Work as a team? Make quick decisions or meet deadlines? Organize and implement projects?

If you can analyze, write, plan, organize, lead others and work with a team -- you have just identified six highly valued skills you can place on a resume, discuss in a job interview and put to use in a new work setting.

When starting a military transition (http://www.excelsior.edu/web/career-center/military-transition-job-resources ) job search, you can also identify your transferable and work-content skills with online career assessment tools and career guidebooks. Keep this list updated over time, as you progress and evolve in your career. This “skills package” record will be a valuable resource for your future, and a reminder of how far you have come.

Trouble getting started?

Taking inventory of your various skills and categorizing them may seem like a daunting task, but there are several online tools you can use to get started. Excelsior offers free advice at its site (http://www.excelsior.edu/web/career-center/military-transition-job-resources ). Take your time to reflect upon all that you have done. Talk with your friends, family and coworkers to discover more about the valuable transferable skills they believe you exhibit, since they can offer helpful observations that you may not see. These small steps will help you prepare for a job search and feel more confidence in your ability to convince employers that you are the person they’ve been looking to hire.

Veterans may not realize the many exceptional transferable skills they have acquired through their military service. Veterans are trained to lead by example, work respectfully and collaboratively, and accomplish tasks on time – even when facing adversity. They understand the importance of dedication and perseverance. These are all skills employers seek.

RDVF ESTABLISHES MEMORIALS FOR 42ND IRAQ VETERANS

As you know, one of our stated goals as a Foundation is to maintain existing memorials and establish new memorials in order to preserve the Legacy of our Division and its Soldiers. In the near future we will have posted to our website the entire list and location of all 42nd Division memorials/monuments, they are numerous! Two such memorials exist in Garden City LI, NY the other at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. These two memorials commemorate the mobilization and deployment of the 42nd for WWI and WWII and stand in recognition of the sacrifices of those soldiers and families. Now we are pleased to establish new memorials at Fort Drum and Fort Dix, the site of the mobilization and deployment of the 42nd for the Iraq war. This is the ten year anniversary of the mobilization of the 42nd for the Iraq war. The RDVF unanimously approved the expenditure of funds to support the establishment of these memorials calling them totally in keeping with our Foundations mission.

The mobilization and deployment of the 42nd for the Iraq war was the first call up of a National Guard Division for combat since the Korean War. The 42nd was the first or only two NG Division called to duty for the Iraq or Afghanistan Wars. It was truly historic and added greatly to the Legacy of our beloved Division. The 42nd occupied a large portion of North Central Iraq (the size of West Virginia!) which was home to some 6.5 million Iraqi citizens. The 42nd was the third US Division Hq’s to occupy the palace complex in Sadaam Hussein’s home town of Tikrit and was The US Hq’s that turned it back to the Iraqi people. The 42nd Division was awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation for its outstanding performance.

The memorial ceremony at Fort Drum is scheduled for Jun 28th. The Fort Dix ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Sep 13th. You can stay up to date on all the details by going to the RDVF website and clicking on events. We will post ceremony details there. There is a short article in the April Reveille regarding the general agenda for the June 28th event.

We are anticipating the Memorials (depicted in the picture below) to cost in the range of $10,000 each. The Foundation will be responsible to pay not only for the plaque and granite mounting stone, but also for the concrete pad and walkway. We are asking our members to donate to the Iraq memorial fund to help defray expenses.

While the Foundation can and will pay for all costs, donations will help keep our memorial funds available for the sustainment of existing memorials for the upcoming WWI anniversaries! 2014-18 marks the 100 year anniversary of WWI. Preparations in France are well underway and the 42nd has been asked to play a role in the festivities at a time and date to be determined. Obviously we have many WWI memorial and monuments across France and we want to make sure they are all in good shape and representative of our Divisions legacy and its soldiers.

For many adult learners heading back to school, career advancement is among the top deciding factors. However, just as a degree can help a candidate differentiate themselves in a competitive job market, so can a well-written resume or cover letter, which is why college career services are in-demand.

For good or ill, first impressions matter.

To help meet this demand, the Excelsior College Career Center has partnered with Smarthinking, an online tutoring service, to offer comprehensive resume and cover letter critique service free of charge to enrolled students. The college will also continue to offer its own fee-based service conducted by professional career counselors for alumni and current students.

“Although social media tools like LinkedIn have become prevalent in the professional world, a strong, targeted resume and cover letter still remains a prominent gateway to the job interview, said Maribeth Gunner, director of career services at Excelsior. “To be considered for any new position, students will need a marketable resume that outlines their unique value and captures the attention of potential employers.”

The new Excelsior College resume and cover letter critique service assists students in learning how to best showcase their skills and accomplishments. Whether it is guidance in developing a newly formatted resume, or minor suggestions on how to polish current credentials, the objective of Smarthinking critique services is to help students create professional, well-designed documents that can capture the attention of an employer.

Available 24/7, a professional e-structor will review a student’s resume, include suggestions, identify next steps, and provide references to additional guides and resources as needed. According to the Career Center, documents submitted for review will be returned to students within a 24 hour timeframe.

Excelsior already offers on-demand online tutoring through Smarthinking for students enrolled in online courses or its credit by examination program, UExcel.

Excelsior College has an education partnership with Rainbow Division Veterans Foundation. RDVF’s employees, members and their spouses or domestic partners will receive reduced pricing on tuition and fees while pursuing associate and bachelor degrees and 15% reduced tuition for graduate/master’s degrees at Excelsior College. For more information on the partnership go to: http://www.excelsior.edu/rainbow-division-veterans-fund

By Spc. J.p. Lawrence, 42nd Infantry Division Public Affairs

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. – Sgt. 1st Class John A. Wilson stands guard, just as he has for the last few hours. To his right, 30 feet away, is a downed power line, entangled in a fallen true. Is it live? Is it dead? No matter. Each wire could be dangerous. Wilson’s mission: man the wire and ensure the public stays safe and far away.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has mobilized more than 2,800 Servicemembers of New York’s volunteer military forces to help civilian authorities in recovery efforts in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Sandy. In Westchester and Rockland counties, those efforts include standing guard over fallen wires.

By standing guard, servicemembers of the New York National Army Guard, the New York Air National Guard, the New York Naval Militia, and the New York Guard aim to help civilian recovery efforts restore electricity as soon as possible.

Electrical workers have been working around the clock to restore the power, but there are only so many workers to go around. In the meantime, someone has to make sure that until the wires are fixed or deadened, no New Yorker is endangered.

Servicemembers like Wilson, a saxophone player with the 42nd Infantry Division Band, are sent in teams to each downed wire. Then, armed with barricade tape, traffic triangles and flashlights, they cordon the area around the downed wires and stand guard until a civilian electrical worker comes by.

In addition to securing the safety of nearby New Yorkers, each 12-hour shift relieves civilian electrical workers from wire guard duty and allows them to focus on bringing the power back.

The help is much appreciated, Donato Jimenez, an Environmental Health and Safety Specialists with Consolidated Edison, said as he briefed a group of servicemembers.

“I’m a little emotional,” Jimenez, who said he was at the end of a long week, said. “I’ve never been around so many people who do so much for America.”

The job requires long hours in the cold or in the dark, Jimenez said, and in the past, frustrated customers have made the job difficult for wire watchers.

“No one’s gonna say, ‘thank you for watching the wire!’” Jimenez said. “It’s a thankless job, but we need it to free up people and help restore power.”

Nonetheless, numerous civilians went out of their way to thank the servicemembers on wire watch. Tom O’Daniels and his son, Tyler, whose home Wilson stood in front of, came out to give thanks and cookies and coffee.

“Every house we went to, a civilan would come up to us, as military personnel, to give us thanks,” 1st Lt. Lenon Charles, a sustainment officer with the 42nd Infantry Division, said.

“It makes us feel,” Charles, a Brooklyn, N.Y., resident, said, “that we are doing what we are trained to do, which is help the community and the people of the community.”
